Structured Cabling Orange CountyAdvanced Alarm & Fire, Inc. and our IBEW Union electricians are the most highly trained professionals anywhere in any market for your data cabling needs. Many electrical low voltage firms shy away from installing structured cabling due the fact that if done poorly, it will negatively affect the performance of the system, and leave the installer with weeks, months and sometimes even years of headaches in comeback troubleshooting.  In addition to being highly trained, we are also highly experienced. We have completed structured cabling projects in schools, government buildings, commercial office buildings, as well as very large distribution centers.

At this point in the world, we take for granted that in most places we go, we can get access to the internet by signing onto a WiFi network, or by plugging into a data port. However, moving data signals from point A. to point B. involves an intricate network of something commonly referred to as STRUCTURED CABLING.  This low voltage cabling has also moved far beyond the world of “America Online”. These data cables now control everything from security cameras to access control systems, to telecom systems. And yes, they still handle data from the internet. In fact, the “language “of structured cabling systems uses IP, or internet protocol.

What is structured cabling? It is the backbone of data transmission in every modern building. When thinking about structured cabling, we break the system into six basic areas.

  1. Building Entrance
The point of interface between the outside provider and the building.
  2. Main Equipment Room
Brain of the systems. While it may not create the data being transmitted, it decides where it goes. From the MDF, or Main Distribution Frame carries data to the entire system.
  3. Backbone Cabling
Main cabling that carries data to and from the end users and the MDF. Since the bandwidth of each individual user has become so great that to feed those users you must have a cable that can send and receive the combined needs of all of the users. Most modern buildings are now installing FIBER OPTIC CABLING, which uses light impulses to transmit all of the cumulative data to and from the MDF. Fiber optic cabling can carry far more data than even the purist copper cables.

4. Telecommunications Closet
From the MDF, data travels across the backbone cabling to the telecommunications closet, where it connects to the IDF, or intermediate distribution frame. From the IDF, the cables then are distributed to the various end user points in that area.

5. Horizontal Cabling
Typically the copper cabling that is installed usually within 100 meters of the end connection point. It is categorized by Category, or CAT + a number.

CAT 5- CAT 5 can transmit up to 100 Mbps or megabits per second (100,048,576 Bytes per second)
CAT 5E – the E stands for enhanced. This is true gigabit speed- 1000Mbps (one billion bytes per second.
CAT 6- This capable of up to 10Gbps speed.

6. Work Areas
This is the end of the line for structured cabling. This is typically where you plug into an outlet using a data cord.
